Broker Spotlight: Brian Smith

A penchant for business is what brought Brian into the commercial real estate industry. Upon graduation from Cleveland State University, he spent several years in industrial sales before receiving his first taste of entrepreneurism while managing multiple fitness clubs in the Northeast Ohio area and Florida. Not long after, he transitioned into the tanning business and gained first-hand experience in the buyer/ tenant side of real estate.

“Business development has long been my passion. Owning and managing high volume retail stores is what gave me the valuable knowledge of what it takes to grow a business, and moreover, how important real estate is to its success.”

Brian spent the next 12 years acquiring, expanding and growing his businesses, and as he worked alongside various brokers to negotiate transactions, acquisitions or search for new locations he realized how much he enjoyed the industry. In 2016 he decided to make the jump into commercial real estate full-time by joining Cushman & Wakefield | CRESCO.

As a resident of Amherst, Brian offers valuable insight into the northwestern Ohio markets from Toledo to Cleveland, and it was with this insight that he was able to close one of his more significant transactions: a 305,000 square foot industrial building in Sandusky. Brian tapped into his business ownership mindset while canvassing the area to meet with local companies in an effort to discover who might be looking to expand. He ultimately closed the deal with one of Sandusky’s most established corporations –keeping them headquartered in their desired location.

Although Brian prefers not to specialize in just one area of the industry, his diverse background lends value to all, including industrial, retail and land. He also uses his extensive background in business to advise his clients on matters beyond real estate; sharing his own experiences – both positive and negative – in an effort to guide them on the right path. Above all else, Brian truly enjoys being at the forefront of business and economic development.

“I like being in the know. Every deal or transaction, large or small, has some type of effect on the community – and usually for the better. Whether it’s revitalizing vacant buildings or bringing new types of businesses to the market, these companies are looking to make an impact. It’s amazing to be a part of, and watch, these concepts come to life – and to witness the critical role that real estate plays in their visions.”

When he’s not working, you can almost always find Brian on a golf course. A natural competitor and scratch player, he’s been playing for over a decade, winning many tournaments and multiple club championships. His greatest passion, however, is spending time with his 4-year-old Manchester terrier, Willow, who is his pride and joy.
